Mika Vainio - Rasputin 3000 (comfortzone)
Mika Vainio’s second single for Viennese imprint comfortzone continues in the doomtronica fashion that defined his 2011 album, ‘Life (…it Eats You Up)’: Distorted, grumbling synth assaults over lo-fi drum computer patterns. Intense!
EP and single tracks now available for download (MP3 / 320 kb/s)

Waking up hardcore.

Kill For Love (Night Riders Dub)’ by Chromatics

Stripped of it’s drum machine pulse and euphoric build, the relatively low key edit by Parisian group Night Riders leaves singer Ruth Radelet locked in a state of inertia, her voice left to roam alone against the alien-sounding throb of synthesiser. With less focus on forward momentum, and greater emphasis on her sullen tone, lines like “In my mind I was waiting for change, while the world just stayed the same” feel more like sorrowful regrets than empowering statements of individualism, as translates in the original.

Ólafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm - Stare (Erased Tapes)
Two poster boys of modern classical music team up for a three-track EP. On ‘Stare’ Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm underpin their compositions with a surprising amount of electronic sequencing. Blissful ambient on side A and more sombre moods on side B provide perfect Sunday listening pleasures.

Lontano

György Ligeti, The Shining: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

György Ligeti - Lontano (The Shining: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

“One dimension of my music bears the imprint of a long time spent in the shadow of death both as an individual and as a member of a group [Hungarian Jews during WWII]. Not that it lends a tragic quality to my music, quite the opposite.

Anyone who has been through horrifying experiences is not likely to create terrifying works of art in all seriousness. He is more likely to alienate.”

-Ligeti, quoted in Ligeti in Conversation (1984)
